I know most people won’t touch this with a ten foot pole and that’s fine. I just want to clarify a bit.
After 9/11 happened, I wanted justice, just like everyone else. The war on terrorism though, was not my idea of justice. I guess I’m more tit for tat. I’d prefer making a list of those responsible and sending in the A Team to take them out. I like justice. I like punishment. I like sending a message that if you jack with us, this is what we’re going to do with you. The “war on terrorism” is a bit difficult in that it’s an ever changing list of people that may or may not ever attack us. Can you really hold someone accountable for a crime they might commit? I have issues with that.
For whatever reason you want to believe, we went into Iraq. That reason and whether it was right or wrong, no longer matters. What matters now is that we finish setting up the government that we started there. People seem to think that this is an overnight operation. They want to think that all you have to do is free people and they will take care of themselves. That’s not so. There’s no reason to believe that Iraq will be any different from Germany. We have to stay there long enough to retrain the minds of the young, basically. Otherwise, they’ll go right back to doing things the only way they’ve known how. If we up and leave, we will have simply started more civil unrest. That’s where the Vietnam comparisons come into play.
With all that said, I hope that we (the US population) have learned something from Vietnam. Even if our troops get pulled out, I’d like to believe that we would not spit on our soldiers, call them baby killers, and any number of other ghastly things we did back in Vietnam. I would hope that if we haven’t learned anything else, we would have learned not to take our anger out on the troops. Instead, we should place it squarely on the shoulders of those politicians that are responsible.
Now for my opinion of the military in regards to blogs and such. They all seem to be on the defensive and have that swarm mentality. They’re ready to attack anyone in their efforts to defend themselves. I’d love to be able to take away whatever their fears are so that I could once again listen to their opinions and hear their stories. Instead though, all I get from them is, “Here’s another guy attacking us! Stupid jerk. Doesn’t he know that we’re fighting for him?!? How can he claim to be patriotic when he talks that way???” It’s a huge turn off. I don’t want to listen to that any more than I want to listen to the news.
I miss the days when I’d simply get an account of what their day was like over there. When I’d get pics of what would be a lovely sunrise except for a dozen men with guns around a fenced in area. I liked the emails about how they saw the quality of life over there and felt they were making it a better place.
Those are the kinds of things that will get the general population behind the effort. When those stories are no longer being told because our military folks are too busy trying to defend themselves, then I (and others) simply tune out the noise the same way I tune out the kids arguing about who called shotgun.
We have the internet. Why aren’t our soldiers making more use of it? Why is the military not launching a campaign to win the public opinion rather than going on the defensive? “Here are pics of the kids that now have schools. They’re even learning a little English like, “Do you have any candy?”" That kind of stuff should be everywhere so that when people google Iraq war, they get pics of the good we’re doing rather than death and destruction.
I’ve said it time and time again. It’s all about PR. If you’re not getting the support and following you want, then take matters into your own hands and create it. It shouldn’t be too hard because in all honesty, while I and others did not support going over there in the first place, there’s no way we can not support helping to rebuild and educate a country that’s seen so much fighting. It appeals to our need to make a difference and make the world a better place. If we see enough about that, we’ll stop arguing about if it was our place to go in there and do that. We’ll just want to continue the good works.

I never use cheap TP.
If at all possible, I hold it until I get home. If not, I use enough to clog dams.

Actually, I agree. The ONE THING to not be cheap on is toilet paper! There are lots of other areas you can cut corners and save a few cents, but that is one sacrifice I’m not willing to make. =)
What’s even funnier to me is that she borrowed a 4 pack and didn’t replace it with the same product. I mean, if that’s the product she wants to use in her household, that’s fine… but if you’re going to repay the loan (even though you said to not worry about it), at least do so with a comparable product! lol
